Samuel C. Vance (d. 1830), a U.S. Army officer in the Northwest Territory, was deputy paymaster at Fort Washington, near Cincinnati (1791-1802). From 1803-1830 he was a merchant and land speculator at Lawrenceburg (Dearborn County, Ind.). Lawrence M. Vance operated a general merchandise store in Indianapolis and was a contractor for the construction of the Lawrenceburg and Upper Mississippi Railroad and other railroad lines.
